This map illustrates the approximate location of the emergency shelters in the island of Barbados.
Emergency shelters can be used for several natural and man-made hazards including hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, fires, oil spills and aircraft crashes to mention only a few. Shelters can be divided into two catergories:
Category 1- Shelters which may be used during a hurricane or other hazard event.
Category 2- Shelters which may be used if they are still in a reasonable condition after a hazard event or disaster.
To zoom to your location and find shelters near you press the marker icon on right of the screen.
It should be stressed that persons who seek refuge in shelters do so at their own risk. It is therefore recommended that your home or the home of a relative or friend should always be your first option for sheltering. If you plan to remain at home, a safe room would essentially be the room with the least number of openings (windows and doors) to the outside, such as a bathroom or walk-in closet. Persons are however advised to prepare emergency kits in case they have to go to a shelter. Non-perishable food items should be included to last for at least three (3) days.
This map is NOT FOR OFFICIAL USAGE and should not be used as your final point for selecting your nearest shelter. For more information, ensure to check with the BGIS Website or District Emergency website.

Upon the events of the 2016 and 2017 Hurricane seasons which devasted several Caribbean islands, the creator realised that maps where essential in times of crisis. This lead to the creation of this map you see in 2017 after the advise of a colleauge who aided in the relief efforts in the Virgin Islands.
It was created using Leaflet and QGIS, particularly the qgis2web plugin.
